Gawker: Gun Company CEO’s Are To Blame
The website Gawker has a long and distinguished history of writing some pretty stupid things. Writer Drew Magary’s lengthy screed today attacking firearm manufacturers and the people who run them is a prime example. He collectively refers to gun manufacturers as “Big Gun” and says it’s time we start making their CEO’s “part of the conversation.”
Ron Cohen is the CEO of Sig Sauer, the company that produced one of the guns that was used in Friday’s Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre. You have probably never heard of Ron Cohen before. I know I never have. I tried to find a decent picture of him this weekend, but I came up empty. He may as well not exist.
In the wake of the shootings, Cohen’s name has appeared in a grand total of one Google alert. This is by design. You aren’t supposed to know anything about Ron Cohen or about Sig Sauer. Every time a tragedy happens and you, Mr. Gun Control Advocate, decide to lash out at the NRA, or at “our national obsession with guns,” or at the classic straw man hunter who needs a 50-bullet clip just to chase down a squirrel, you’re doing Ron Cohen, Sig Sauer, and everyone else at Big Gun a huge favor.
One of the amazing things about the gun control debate in America is the remarkable success with which gun manufacturers—Sig Sauer, Glock, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, The Freedom Group (yes, it’s called the fucking Freedom Group)—have been able to avoid the conversation altogether. When you think of Glock, you think of a gun, and not of the company behind it.
Magary’s absurd argument is that we should somehow hold Sig CEO Ron Cohen personally responsible for one of his guns being used at Sandy Hook. He must pay the price for a kid stealing his mother’s legally purchased Sig firearm and going on a killing spree? That’s about the dumbest argument I’ve heard thus far in the wake of this tragedy.
Using that logic I guess we need to hold Anheuser-Busch President, Luiz Fernando Edmond, personally responsible for each and every alcohol related traffic death that occurs in this country. When a person gets blind drunk on Budweiser at a football game, gets behind the wheel, and kills a family of four — Luiz Fernando Edmond is to blame.
What about all the people who die from overdosing on prescription medication? Should we hold the CEO of Roche USA responsible when people eat too many Valium and wash them down with a bottle of booze? Maybe we should hold the CEO of both pill and liquor companies accountable, no?
What happened at Sandy Hook is beyond tragic. It’s about the worst thing imaginable. But the real issue is mental illness not guns. Maybe we should be holding a few doctors responsible for what happened.

What exactly would their contribution to the conversation be? The kid stole legally purchased guns from his mother. What exactly should the CEO of Sig say about that? Sorry, that happened? What is it you want him and other gun company CEO’s to do?

You forget one thing: Budweiser isn’t lobbying for drunk driving laws to be relaxed, or repealed.
I get your logic, but when you make arguments like this you only make it harder for sensible gun owners who want sensible laws.

The NRA has been very supportive of legislation that helps keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill.

Veteran NBC Reporter Richard Engel Missing In Syria
NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel has been missing in Syria since last Thursday. Engel is very experienced in reporting from war zones. He spent years reporting from Iraq, Afghanistan, and other host spots around the world.
NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel has gone missing in Syria, according to Turkish news reports. The reports also say that Aziz Akyavaş, a Turkish journalist working with Engel, is unaccounted for. NBC News has been successfully keeping Engel’s status subject to a news blackout—one to which Gawker agreed until now—for at least the past 24 hours.
Turkish newspaper Hurriyet is reporting that Engel and Akyavaş were last known to be in Syria and haven’t been in contact with NBC News since Thursday morning. The news has been reported widely in the Turkish press over the past 24 hours, including by Turkish news channel NTV, which presents itself as an international partner of MSNBC. It’s also been widely distributed on Twitter.
NBC News is asking for everyone to participate in a news blackout regarding Engel’s current status and is refusing to comment on the reports coming from Turkish media outlets. That could mean they either don’t know yet where he is or they know he’s been kidnapped and are working back channels.

you’re doing exactly what roger and other gun company ceo’s want by not wanting to have them be a part of the conversation about gun violence. you are one of the people Magary was talking about in the article. you give these guys a free pass. i think it’s great that you don’t give a shit about this shooting. and you say that we should hold doctors responsible. doctors are some of the only ones trying to help these people unlike gun company ceo’s and pricks like you and you want to punish them for that. great plan moron
