New York Re-Passes Harsh Gun Laws
New York State passed the toughest gun control laws in the nation today…or rather they re-passed them.
New York’s Assembly on Tuesday easily passed the toughest gun control law in the nation and the first since the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, calling for a tougher assault weapons ban and provisions to try to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill who make threats.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushed hard for the bill, which passed the Senate on Monday night. He is expected to quickly sign the measure into law.
“This is a scourge on society,” Cuomo said Monday night, six days after making gun control a centerpiece of his State of the State address. The bipartisan effort was fueled by the Newtown tragedy that took the lives of 20 first graders and six educators. “At what point do you say, `No more innocent loss of life’?”
The measure, which passed the Assembly 104-43, also calls for restrictions on ammunition and the sale of guns.
“This is not about taking anyone’s rights away,” said Sen. Jeffrey Klein, a Bronx Democrat, when the bill passed the Senate late Monday night. “It’s about a safe society … today we are setting the mark for the rest of the county to do what’s right.”
I love it when these foolish politicians say “it’s not about taking anyone’s rights away.” I guess they mean unless your rifle has a pistol grip and the magazine holds more than 7 rounds. After all it’s those darn pistol grips that cause such carnage around the nation.
What these idiots don’t seem to understand is that someone who wants to commit a gun crime doesn’t give a damn about this new law. The new law requires gun owners with high-capacity magazines (ones that hold more than 7 rounds) to sell them out of state within one year — or else.
But here’s the funniest part of New York’s “new” law. The so-called “assault weapons” it outlawed today were already illegal in the state as were high-capacity magazines. All they did was lower the magazine capacity from 10 rounds to 7. I’m sure the loss of those 3 extra rounds is gonna save thousands of lives. What a joke. And I’m sure the gangsters in NYC will be sure to keep their magazines under the 7 round limit.
